A native of Bangor, Maine, Mark H. Robinson attended school in Portland, Maine and applied and was appointed to the Maine Maritime Academy. He graduated in 1966 and received a commission for the United Stated Navy or in the United States Merchant Marines. He chose the Merchant Marines and was hired as a cadet for Lykes Brothers Steamship Company. During his thirty year employment with this company, he sailed to and from Vietnam the wartime. At the end of a voyage lasting 90 days or longer, a 90 day vacation was mandatory. On each of those vacations, Mark returned to a school for Merchant Marines in “ Mitage”, in Lithecum Heights, Maryland. Over the years Mark received his Captain’s license, where he continued sailing for thirty years. He sailed all over the world being employed with the Lykes Brothers Steamship Company. Many great calm voyages and others very frightening with bad weather, rough water coming over the boat, crew problems, and pirates. The ship had a crew of thirty-six and the captain was responsible. He has many sea stories and often shares them these days. In 1997, after sailing six voyages all around the world it was time for retirement. Mark met Joan Urban, her parents Vivian and Fred, and neighbors the F.B. Ellisons, and said he fell in love with Baldwin County’s Rosinton Community. Well, we know now it was mostly, in love with Joan. He built and designed a home on a waterfront lot in fort Morgan, Alabama but after six hurricanes, decided to live in Gulf Shores and Rosinton Community. Two other places of employment have been the Fort Morgan Marina and Federal Emergency Management Agency. Mark always had a camera, with a dark room when he was a younger boy in Bangor, Maine and having one during thirty years of sailing compiled an extensive collection. Now, he has 4 very big and heavy cameras and photography is still something he loves, especially beach photography and beach weddings. He does a lot of volunteer work with the Gulf Shores Police Department, City of Gulf Shores, the local newspapers, the Shrimp Festival, Rosinton Community and of course the Baldwin County Fair. Joan says Mark is a very generous, loving and caring person for his county, his community and his friends. The Baldwin County Fair is very fortunate to be one his friends. Thank you “Captain” for all our Fair memories you photograph for us.
